How LED Message Centers Work: Brightness, Pixel Pitch & Resolution
An electronic message center (EMC) is built from a grid of LEDs, and a few specs determine how good it looks and how well it performs:
Pixel pitch
The distance between LEDs, measured in millimeters. A smaller pitch (e.g., 10mm) packs more LEDs in, producing sharper images at close viewing distances; a larger pitch is appropriate for high-speed, long-range road frontage. The right pitch is a function of how far away your viewers are.
Brightness (nits)
Outdoor EMCs need high brightness to stay readable in direct sun, paired with automatic dimming so they’re not blinding at night (and so they meet local light-output rules).
Resolution & matrix
Together with pitch, this sets how much text, graphics, or animation the display can render cleanly.
We size the display to your site — frontage, speed limit, viewing distance, and the kind of content you want to run — rather than selling a one-size box. EMCs also integrate cleanly into a monument sign, pylon sign, or building sign so the digital element reads as part of one unified sign, not a bolt-on.
Sign Code & Electronic Message Center Permitting in NC
Electronic message centers are the most heavily regulated sign type in most North Carolina jurisdictions. Ordinances commonly restrict maximum brightness, require automatic dimming at night, mandate a minimum dwell time between message changes (often 5–8 seconds), and prohibit animation, scrolling, or full-motion video. Some districts cap the EMC’s share of total sign area or bar them entirely in certain zones.
Getting this wrong is expensive — a non-compliant display can be ordered dark or removed. We handle the permitting research up front, design the sign to the local rule set in Hickory, Asheville, and Winston-Salem, and configure the display’s brightness and dwell settings to match. Schools, churches, municipalities, and retailers are the most common users — anywhere the message needs to change daily without a new printed panel each time.

Flexible Signage Designed for Modern Communication.
Promote Multiple Messages from One Sign
Instead of being limited to one static message, electronic signs allow you to display multiple announcements in the same space—maximizing your visibility and marketing opportunities.
Cost-Effective Long-Term Advertising
Although the initial investment can be higher than traditional signs, electronic message centers eliminate recurring printing and installation costs, making them a cost-effective advertising tool over time.
Highly Visible Day or Night
High-brightness LED technology ensures electronic message centers remain visible in daylight and at night, helping attract attention from both pedestrians and passing traffic.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions About Electronic Message Center Signs
What is an electronic message center sign?
An electronic message center (EMC) is a digital LED sign capable of displaying changeable text, images, or graphics that can be updated electronically through software or remote systems.
What types of businesses use electronic signs?
Electronic message centers are commonly used by schools, churches, retail businesses, restaurants, municipalities, and commercial properties to promote events, sales, announcements, and other important information.
Can electronic signs display different messages throughout the day?
Yes. Electronic signs can be programmed to rotate multiple messages or schedule different content at specific times of day, allowing businesses to target promotions and announcements more effectively.
Are electronic message center signs difficult to update?
No. Most electronic signs use simple software that allows you to update messages quickly from a computer or cloud-based system, making it easy to keep your signage current without physical changes.
